Sometimes, it's what you don't know...

I'm sure you've heard that old adage "What you don't know can't hurt you". But...in some cases, it sure can't help you either. We visited Seven Steakhouse in the Theatre District last Saturday night on a whim really. We had concert tickets at the State Theater, and wanted to ride the light rail so were in need of something walkable. I went online to research what was in the area, and Seven happened to be the most convenient stop on the path to the concert we were so focused on. We decided to roll the dice and give it a shot. From the moment we walked through the revolving door, we knew we had stumbled across something special.

We were seated at a table facing a huge wall of windows that let just the right amount of light in, and gave us a great vantage point for people watching. A Saturday night downtown always has an energy about it, and it was fun to feel that even through the glass. We were quickly greeted by our server, who was very knowledgeable about the menu, and gave us a quick course on their impressive steak selection. She mentioned as a restaurant, they have the first choice in premium Angus meats among all the downtown steakhouses. I thought really? Before Manny's, Murray's, Ruth's Chris...really? Even though I had my heart set on the blackened sea scallops, that fact will remain tucked away in my memory bank to be cashed in on my next craving for red meat.

Most people consider bread kind of a "throw away" course, but not here. Bread at Seven could be the reason to visit alone. The basket arrived warm, and with a soft maple flavored butter that could've made a stale crouton taste good. But these were no stale croutons...instead, they were offerings of comfort, and set the stage for what was to come. My sea scallops were blackened with a cajun seasoning that was just perfect. I could still taste the delicate flavor of the sea, but with a kick. Mike had a burger which maybe doesn't sound that exciting, but one bite and you'd think otherwise. The flame kissed meat had just the right amount of char on the outside, was topped with smokey bacon and aged cheddar, and sandwiched inside a warm toasted buttery bun. I am not one to order a hamburger when going out for a nice dinner, but after tasting his I wonder if I should rethink my policy.

So, now we know. Seven Steakhouse had a classy but lively atmosphere, knowledgeable service, and food that was out of this world. Seven is perfect for a special occasion or trendy night out, but I wouldn't hesitate to stop on the way to a Twins game either. They had options to break the bank, but also offered a very affordable tasting menu, and inexpensive sushi options. We can't wait to go back, and I would suggest if you don't know, find out!
